Why you should compare apples and oranges
Why you should analyze apples and oranges Why you should think about apples and oranges Numerous figures of speech in English have flummoxed me since I began learning the language in center school. Yet, one tops the rundown: looking at apples and oranges. The first occasion when I heard the expression in my first year of school, it left me speechless. The discussion went something like this:That resembles contrasting apples and oranges. So what? You can't think about the two!Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Wait, what? What do you mean I can't think about the two? They're too different.[At this point, dear peruser, you might need to pivot and turn away. I'm going to think about apples and oranges].They're the two natural products. They're both round. The two of them have a slight tart taste. They're about a similar size. What's more, the two of them develop on trees.Yes, more joins apples and oranges than separates them. (Scott Sanford of the NASA Ames Research Cent er made this examination a stride further. He utilized infrared spectrometry to analyze a Granny Smith apple and a Sunkist orange and demonstrated that the spectra of the two organic products are strikingly comparable. The investigation, with the offhanded title Apples and Oranges: A Comparison, was distributed in the humorous logical magazine, Improbable Research.).Yet, the phrase flourishes in light of the fact that, as people, we're horrendous at seeing associations between apparently divergent things, anyway minor their disparities may be. Rather, we contrast one type with it's logical counterpart and oranges to oranges. In our expert lives, we look to the rivals in our own industry and duplicate from their playbooks. In our own lives, we receive the design feeling of our companions and reverberation their political perspectives. We use phrases like apples and oranges to stop the correlation discussion before it even begins. But to me, there's little to be gained from contrasting comparative things. Achievements happen when we see the likeness in the unique and consolidate and recombine apples and oranges into an inventive soup.Originality frequently comprises in connecting up thoughts whose association was not recently suspected, composed William Beveridge in his 1957 book, The Art of Scientific Investigation. Decades later, Steve Jobs resounded a similar assumption: Imagination is simply associating things, he said. At the point when you ask inventive individuals how they accomplished something, they feel somewhat remorseful on the grounds that they didn't generally do it, they just observed something.Albert Einstein called this thought combinatory play, which he accepted is the basic component in beneficial idea. Combinatory play, as Elizabeth Gilbert describes it, is the demonstration of opening up one mental direct by fiddling with another. During snapshots of trouble, Einstein would snatch his violin and play Mozart to disentangle the music of the cos mos.Steve Jobs acquired from calligraphy to make different typefaces and relatively divided text styles on the Macintosh. In making his hypothesis of development, Charles Darwin was motivated by the market analyst Thomas Malthus, who contended that populaces will in general grow out of assets, making an opposition for survival.Darwin then started to contemplate which populaces are preferred arranged over others to endure. In making the print machine, Johannes Gutenberg was enlivened by the hardware utilized for squeezing wine grapes.Great artists additionally use mixes. Iron Maiden's music joins the improbable components of Shakespeare, history, and overwhelming metal. The late David Bowie was an ace at re-blending. As David Moldawer writes, Bowie would gather lumps of text from different sources, cut them up, and revamp them to fashion verses with astonishing and important blends of words, pictures, thoughts. The incredible record maker Rick Rubin tells his bands not to tune in to famous melodies while they produce a collection. Rather, he says that they're in an ideal situation drawing motivation from the world's most prominent exhibition halls than discovering it in the current Billboard charts. But we can't consolidate thoughts on the off chance that we don't see the similitudes between them. A large portion of us stay in our humanities track or science track and shut off our brains to ideas from over the aisle.Life, it turns out, doesn't occur in compartmentalized silos. What's common in one field is phenomenal in the other. A transformation in one industry can start with the appropriation of a thought from another. Truly, by and large, the fit won't be great. Be that as it may, the negligible demonstration of correlation will start new lines of thinking. The next time somebody blames you for contrasting apples and oranges, wear it as a symbol of respect. Another conceivable marker is a set of working responsibilities that requests inconceivably wide-going abilities, or numerous different kinds of yields expected all the time. Estimating achievement in a job that is inexactly characterized can be intenseâ"and it can imply that you pass up chances for progression. Excessively expansive or particularly indistinct sets of expectations can likewise show that an organization is attempting to extend its financial plan and recruit one individual to complete the elements of numerous employments. Some may see that as a chance, while others may consider it to be a weight. Everything relies upon your objectives and desires. Or then again perhaps you want a vocation where you try sincerely while you're there, however don't accept your position home with you. Perusing sets of expectations cautiously can give you a feeling of whether a job is centered around various transient objectives or on less long haul ones. Quick paced, direness, and cutoff time driven are only a couple of normal terms that ought to be warnings for work searchers increasingly intrigued by huge picture jobs. Whatever pace you like, ensure your resume exhibits it. Reverberation the watchwords from the sets of expectations all through your resume any place they fit to help assemble your nomination. Comprehending what you need in your next activity is significant. In the event that your pursuit of employment strategy is to submit whatever number applications as would be prudent, you're fantastically far-fetched to ever be among the top contender for any activityâ"regardless of whether your capabilities are a match. Just the main 2 percent of employment candidates are offered interviews, as per Robert Meier, leader of Job Market Experts. To be among the best 2 percent of possibility for a vocation, you have to not exclusively be qualified, yet to have modified your application for that particular employment. To check how well you've focused on your resume for a particular activity, run it through Jobscan's online resume investigation apparatus. 12 Great Reminders to Think About Every Day - milewalk
12 Great Reminders to Think About Every Day - milewalk 12 Great Reminders to Think About Every Day We all get lost is the daily shuffle and grind. Life moves at a speed that can run down the most happy and organized people. Whenever I feel as though Iâm moving a little too quickly and missing the joy in any moment, I consider these thoughts, 12 great reminders to get me back on track⦠I canâ"and there are no limits. You know the expression, whether you think you can or canât, youâre right? Thatâs true. I think to have any doubts about yourself is the equivalent of letting a traitor guide your life. More so, what you consider possible will never be a function of your ability as much as it will be a function of your beliefs. My frustration comes from my beliefs not my circumstances. Life happens and things go wrongâ"every single day. People drop balls, thereâs traffic, flight delays, events schedules during the football games (oh dear). The reason this frustrates you is because you believe it should never happen to you. Get over it. My life is my responsibility. Statistically, 75% of people are externally focused versus internally focused. This means more people say or think things such as my wife is driving me crazy, my boss is being unreasonable, or my children arenât treating me well as opposed to Iâm not reacting well to the way my wife is behaving and so forth. You control your thoughts, which feed your actions or reactions. Own them. Donât turn over control of your emotions to someone else. I have this moment. Regret changes the past as much as anxiety changes the future. Only gratitude for your present can change this moment. To be fully present goes hand and hand with⦠Remain open. An open mind is the most peaceful place youâll ever encounter. There is no wind, rain, or snow disturbing the sunshine. It provides an uninhibited ability to think or learn or positively exchange with yourself or someone else. My brain is wonderful, but itâs a slower learner than my heart. Your heart will always know the truth well before your mind ever figures it out. Just think about the last time (or any time for that matter) you threw in the towel. How overdue was that toss? There is no such thing as âexperience.â There is only perception. Do you realize that there is no experience without observation? You observe based on what you perceive. Your perceptions create your beliefs. Your beliefs create your behaviors. Your behaviors produce or reproduce your experience. Itâs that, uh, simple. Major setbacks are necessary. You will never enjoy your life until you learn how to embrace your challenges. The major setbacks you face as you pursue your lifeâs purpose will never hurt as much as the accumulation of half-hearted stumbles you continually encounter performing acts you donât love for people you donât care about. Comparison kills. The happier you can be for some else the less likely youâll be to compare him or her to yourself. Comparison is also a recipe for mediocrity. If your goal is to be âbetter thanâ someone else or you grade life on a curve, youâll never reach your true potential because youâll feel youâve reached it when youâve surpassed someone. Usually that means youâre leaving something on the table. The only person you need to be better than is your yesterdayâs self. I will have no regrets. Iâve met many people in my life. The older ones that have regret usually do so not because of what they did or didnât try or accomplish, but how they treated people over the course of their lives. Everything I want is on the other side of fear. Fear is nothing more that an emotion you feel right before a great growing opportunity. Dive in. The fastest way to become fabulous is to start embracing the mistakes you havenât made yet. I think when Iâm done writing this post; Iâll go make a few right away just so I can get them out of the way. Itâs okay to be different. To attempt to be someone else is a great waste of you. The greatest day of my life was the day Idiscovered it was okay to do things differently than others. The second greatest day was the day I realized I didnât need anyoneâs permission regarding this. Youâll be better off if you not only embrace your uniqueness, but also flaunt it!

Treat Employees Like Volunteers - The Cure for High Staff Turnover - Melissa Llarena
Treat Employees Like Volunteers - The Cure for High Staff Turnover Treat Employees Like Volunteers The Cure for High Staff Turnover? An interview by Melissa Llarena, a career transition and talent management expert, with Christine Schoaff, an IT, and Project Manager who has contributed across 15 years to volunteer organizations in roles ranging from member to executive director.Top Talent Insider, Melissa Llarena: An existing assumption is that engineers are high earners â" you have worked among them and you are one yourself. Tell us why even when employers are handsomely paid you should still treat them as volunteers i.e. why is it NOT enough to pay employees well as a retention strategy?Christine Schoaff: This question gets to the heart of the talent equation. One thing to remember is that all equations have two sides. So here, there is the employee and the employer. The key to getting an employee to stay is in the quality of the relationship. The variables in that formula are similar for employees as well as for volunteers. As Cal Newport s ays in So Good They Canât Ignore You, qualities of autonomy, competence and relatedness are the basis for a fulfilling job. Being a volunteer is defined by these circumstances as well because a volunteer will only continue to contribute when the effort has rewards. For volunteers, these characteristics define the relationship:Autonomy âFeeling that you have control over your day and that your actions are important.â Volunteers decide when to participate and what to contribute. There is likely little or no oversight and everything you do matters in an obvious way.Competence âThe feeling you are good at what you do.â For volunteers, the tasks should be designed so that they can be successfully accomplished with little or no training. Hence everyone can consistently contribute lasting value. In a more structured relationship, the knowledge levels can be higher, though the underlying need to be successful remains.Relatedness âThe feeling of connection to other people.â Volunteers generally are active in a group or other situation where they are contributing in ways that makes the whole more than the sum of the parts. This connection and interaction with others who are contributing helps keep the efforts focused and positive.Volunteers are engaged and active as long as they are successfully contributing. Volunteers can and do vote with their feet; they donât have to come back so every interaction is an opportunity to build a relationship and forward progress or a step towards the exit. A positive, productive, valuable experience is the heart of a successful relationship. Ask yourself Would your employees come to work tomorrow if they werenât paid? Would you want to donate your time to your organization?Top Talent Insider: What are five major leadership learnings that you took away from being in multiple volunteer roles throughout your career? Why are these lessons game changers for managers who want to attract the best talent?Christine Schoa ff: Trust Everyone wants to come to work and succeed! As a manager, you job is to organize, prioritize and communicate to make that possible. Many managers I know think that the job description is âto get things done.â Though true to a point, the game changes when you realize that you get more things done by engaging and activating others to do great work. You have to generate bidirectional trust so that you can effectively delegate tasks and see results flow from work others are doing.Communicate The more people know, the more they can contribute. Open the conversations to allow dialog. People become committed to ideas and plans that they helped create. With the Agile framework and other continuous improvement methodologies, communication is the foundation for success.Hire âtoughâ and stay involved Getting and keeping good people is an investment worth your time. Stay involved with them. There are always more opportunities than you will be able to take advantage of, kn owing which ones resonate with your staff helps you find a direction that everyone can be excited about. Note that hiring âtoughâ is an on-going process, people and business needs change so regularly evaluate if there is a good fit. If not, you can work collaboratively to improve that. Overall, you manage people so set your priorities to spend time on this task!Focus It is important to know what the priorities are! If you have many, you can still only work on the topmost ones. Put a strategic plan in place so that you have the framework for discussing tactical requests. Use this as a basis to say yes as often as possible to all key stakeholders. It is easier in the long run to be good at specific things. Identifying the âhighest point of contributionâ requires determination and clarity, as Greg McKeown asserts. Helping your staff reach that point is a gift only you can provide through the strategy and structure of the groupsâ goals and activities.Continuously improve People are comfortable talking about improving services, features and easily measured activities. It is important to look for these opportunities and to capitalize on them. What I have learned is that there are also professional areas and skills that everyone can assess, evaluate and possibly improve. According to The Carrot Principle, by Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton, more than 50% of employees are dissatisfied. Are you one of them? Do you know why you are satisfied or not? How about your employees? What can you do to change the situation? To attract and keep the best talent, you need to be open to always striving to be the best yourself as well as allowing others around you to be the best.Top Talent Insider: Thinking as a successful entrepreneur [which you are in addition to being an avid volunteer] if we should treat employees as volunteers then how should we treat our clients/customers?Christine Schoaff: As with the talent equation, a client/vendor relationship needs to b e a winning proposition for both sides. As an entrepreneur, I focus on providing services that help others become successful. I treat my clients as strategic partners. Our relationship has to benefit us both and complement one another. Retaining great talent and great clients involves focusing on how everyone can contribute and succeed together.Your clients can be long term strategic partners. You should both have similar target audiences while offering different services or features that complement one another, helping to make a whole greater than the sum of the parts that really delights the customer. Your goal is to amplify and enable a common value proposition.

How to Improve Your Professional Writing Skills for the Workplace (and Why Its Important) CareerMetis.com
Step by step instructions to Improve Your Professional Writing Skills for the Workplace (and Why It's Important) Except if you are an independent essayist and pen words professionally, you most likely haven't offered 'how to improve your expert composing aptitudes' highly thought. The greater part of us are satisfactory journalists and get along fine and dandy by utilizing spellcheck and the third grade language structure rules we still remember.I before e with the exception of after c, right?evalBut imagine a scenario where you were informed that business composing aptitudes, or scarcity in that department, could fundamentally influence your ascent up the vocation stepping stool. Peruse on to discover for what reason having the option to compose well is still so significant and how you can hone this capacity in only 3 straightforward steps. Why Does it Matter? Composing = CommunicationThe demonstration of correspondence is generally connected with talking. All things considered, our words are the principle way we share contemplations, sentiments, and thoughts with each other. Be that as it may, there are different kinds of correspondence as well. The nonverbal eye roll, the disturbed moan, and even the great 'I'm exhausted' yawn we let out in gatherings are for the most part types of correspondence. So are the thoughts that we record on paper, send through a content, or shoot out in an e-mail.If you have feeble composing abilities, you have poor relational abilities, plain and simple. This isn't to state that 'actions speak louder than words.' You should have the option to communicate verbally busy working. At the point when this capacity is combined with brilliant expert composing aptitudes, the alternatives for advancement and accomplishment are endless.Other reasons why you ought to endeavor to improve your business composing abilities:You'll catch better occupations since you'll have the option to make a solid introductory letter and resume.Employers will consider you to be increasingly keen and credible.Influencing others will go to much simpler than it did before. You' ll have the option to construct trust and affinity with individuals quickly.Your association and record keeping abilities will improve. You will feel a lift in confidence.Standing out among your collaborators will happen naturally.More If you've at any point read for a test without knowing primary information, you realize that it is so difficult to prevail without solid essentials. The equivalent is valid for composing. In case you're thinking about how to improve your expert composing aptitudes, the best spot to begin is the square one.You have several choices here.If you're into e-Learning, attempt a speedy Google scan for nothing on the web business composing courses. Looking on Amazon or utilized book shops for business composing or general composing reading material/exercise manuals is likewise a decent option.evalNight classes, proficient improvement courses, and workshops are other acceptable beginning stages for 'invigorating your memory' of a portion of the easier ideas. You may gain proficiency with some new things as well!2) Hone in Your on a Specific SkillOnce you've improved your overall composing abilities for the work environment, you'll need to pick a couple of aptitudes to deal with. Despite the fact that this may appear to be counter-gainful, when it's all said and done, making little enhancements can be a distinct advantage. This is the situation in any field.Let's take an expert ball player for instance. During preparing camp, Lebron James and his partners chip away at an assortment of abilities. At an early stage his profession, he expected to work a great deal on the rudiments, for example, edge protection and shooting three-point shots. Presently, Lebron is viewed as one of the best to have at any point played the game, however that doesn't mean he's perfect. If you solicited a gathering from sports specialists what they consider Lebron James' shortcoming to be on the court, free-toss shooting is an answer that would most likely come up on more than one occasion. Making specialized free tosses is something the star competitor appears to battle with A typical adage directs that a savvy man gains from his own missteps while an insightful man gains from the slip-ups of others. This maxim has a ton of truth to it, particularly when we relate it to the working environment. There is no space for dreary missteps in business in the event that you are attempting to progress to the following level.Of course, flawlessness isn't generally reachable, yet gaining from the disasters of others with regards to proficient abilities can put you in front of the game. Here are some regular business composing traps to avoid:a) Using trendy expressions and abbreviations when you write:evalEvery field has language and popular expressions that are close to home to what they do. Educators talk about IEPS and mind breaks while tech masters are probably going to make reference to AI and API.We frequently get so open to utilizing these sorts of p opular expressions and abbreviations that we accept everybody recognizes what they mean. This can prompt a breakdown of correspondence in the work environment. Ensure the archives you make contain clarifications for shortened forms and are sans language. Doing so will improve the nature of your work as well as your perusers' understanding.evalb) Talking about heaps of things in a single e-mail:This is one that a great deal of us are blameworthy of. Since our reality centers around completing whatever number things one after another as could be expected under the circumstances, it is normal to need to get all that you need to state across with one click. However, with regards to business messages, you should attempt to adhere to one subject for each message. This will enable your peruser to complete two things: comprehend what you're attempting to state a lot simpler and stay organized.c) Delivering awful news through composed communication:Although sending messages or messages to imp art significant news is turning out to be increasingly normal, you ought to abstain from doing this on the off chance that you feel what you need to state is terrible or might disturb the reader. If you have to give criticism that isn't all constructive, lay somebody off, or do a switch in jobs, do it face to face. No measure of progress to your expert composing aptitudes will assist you with tending to these kinds of issues through email. A few things are better-said eye to eye. d) Using 'messaging language' or 'slang' when imparting through writing:Every region of the nation has it's own dialect so to talk with regards to verbal correspondence. In the South, it isn't exceptional to hear somebody state hello, ya'll or what ya'll doing? Communication specialists consider a ton of these 'mistakes' as a major aspect of vernacular, yet that doesn't mean it is proper for business composing for all audiences.Similarly, 'WYD,' emoticons, and other content talk shouldn't be a piece of your expert composition or messages except if your office culture licenses it. It's critical to have the option to do the switch with regards to your work. Continuously write such that puts on a show of being both expert and credible.e) Writing at the last minute:evalThere is a motivation behind why we have first and second draftsâ"the main draft for the most part has a place in the garbage can. Editing and altering are a significant piece of the creative cycle since it is practically difficult to get a record, email, letter, or blog right the first time.Waiting to convey an email on Friday at 4:50 when you're prepared to surge out the entryway will incredibly build your opportunity of grammatical mistakes. Making a post for online networking Sunday night (directly before it is expected) could prompt shame if something is 'off.' If at all conceivable, give yourself some time between making a message and really hitting send or submit.Looking at it a second time with a new pair of eyes wi ll assist you with improving your expert composing aptitudes and pass on the correct message.

This is what he recommends for organizations hoping to make an independent recruit: 1. Move rapidly through the independent recruiting process The long, awkward meeting procedure can be disappointing for any activity up-and-comer, yet it basically isn't adequate to consultants. Since consultants can't depend on consistent pay rates from their present businesses, consistently they are not charging is a botched income chance. On the off chance that you request that they persevere through the equivalent extensive recruiting process as your full-time, changeless representatives, they'll be a distant memory and working for another person when the procedure is finished. To stay away from this circumstance, it's significant for organizations to set up facilitated enlistment and meeting conventions explicit to consultants. For instance, the confirming procedure ought to be smoothed out to a standard arrangement of prerequisites, the quantity of essential meetings ought to be decreased, and remuneration ought to be inquire about based and reasonable. Quality issues, so provisional labor isn't the spot to reduce expenses. A fast employing experience will show that you know and aware of consultants' time and will begin your working relationship on the correct foot. 2. Assemble a pipeline of competitors The hardest part for organizations is regularly finding the correct specialist, and that can be exceptionally serious. Such a large number of organizations start the employing procedure when they are delayed on a task, so they need somebody to begin right away. Therefore, talented consultants frequently meet at numerous spots simultaneously and are off the market inside one to about fourteen days. To draw in and secure the correct ability in a convenient way, organizations need to talk with temporary workers when there isn't a quick need. This relationship-driven way to deal with enrollment will assist organizations with building a pipeline of independent ability that can be connected to ventures without a ton of lead time. Not exclusively will this assistance accelerate the employing procedure, yet it will guarantee that organizations don't pass up top notch independent help during a period of scarcity. 3. Permit breathing room Consultants love and need to have adaptability and power over when, where, why, and how they accomplish their work. An investigation charged by the Freelancers Union and Upwork, Outsourcing in America: 2015, said that 50 percent of respondents state that no measure of cash could convince them to take a full-time gig. Primary concern: specialists truly abhor micromanagement. That is the reason organizations should make a stride back and trust the people they recruit to carry out their responsibility well. All things considered, the best contractual workers have practical experience in doing what they love and are generally great at it. The job of the organization is to give any laborer, full or low maintenance, the devices, institutional information, time limitations, and strengthening to arrive at an effective result, without revealing to them how to arrive. 4. Treat specialists like accomplices Regardless of whether you're working with a lesser worker at your office, a promoting office, or an independent programming engineer, individuals accomplish better work when they feel acknowledged and regarded. To benefit from an independent relationship, organizations should concentrate on framing a genuine association between the specialist and the remainder of the group, joining everybody required on objectives, progress, and mishaps. This kind of understanding encourages these people to deliver a work item in accordance with your main goal, desires, and course of events. 5. Pay on schedule This appears to be fundamental, however it is one of the top regions for miscommunication among organizations and specialists. Before a free specialist starts working, the two gatherings must be perfectly clear on when and how they will be redressed. In the event that the task's extension develops or switches bearing, which it frequently does, you ought to be set up to pay for any extra time. Complete and brief installment isnt only useful for the specialist. In the event that the business ever needs to employ a legitimate consultant again, it is to their greatest advantage to be solid. As the independent workforce keeps on developing, contractual workers will turn into a much greater piece of organizations' staffing methodologies for specific ranges of abilities or task based customers. So as to ensure the relationship is certain and gainful, Patel encourages organizations to begin with a fresh start. Disregard all that you think about recruiting a full-time representative and tailor the whole experience for provisional labor.

3 Reasons For Your Boss to Approve Employer Brand Travel
3 Reasons For Your Boss to Approve Employer Brand Travel Sponsored content Some companies have unlimited travel budgets, but most do not. Every flight, hotel, business dinner is scrutinized and limited in many corporate organizations. And weâre not even talking about business class travel expenses. Basic travel is not cheap. If youâve ever bought a pint or bottle of water on a layover in an airport, youâre probably nodding your head right now. When I started in my first corporate employer branding job (it was called social recruiting back then), I was working remotely from Austin, Texas for a global company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The sourcing team I worked most closely with, was also remote but some of them worked near HQ. They would drive into the office once or twice a week for âface-timeâ with the teams they supported, as well as to occasionally see each other. I was told that there was no travel budget for me to come to the home office. It was my job to research and represent the culture, to articulate it, and to respond as the digital face of our recruiting brand. But I couldnât spend any time experiencing the culture in the space that the company provided for employees. You read that correctly. It wasnât for a lack of trying. I sought out every opportunity to talk with my co-workers. I hosted monthly social media lunch and learn sessions (in part) to feel connected to the team, and even pioneered video calls at the time so I could see their faces. Most of them had video turned off, because they werenât comfortable showing their remote workspaces, and were only used to simple conference calls. Fun fact: half the company couldnât even access social media channels. I even drove for three hours one-way at my own expense, to the nearest satellite office in an attempt to talk to employees face to face. Needless to say, I was not set up for success in this role. Flash forward almost ten years, and video conference calls are the new normal. We see our global co-workers in their natural habitats as they work from home, as well as via video cameras in each of our corporate offices. Our visual appearance on video, even our facial expressions and posture are part of how we communicate. But thereâs still something missing. Back when I started my current role as an employer branding leader with a growing team supporting global initiatives, I had let most of my activities and thinking revolve around corporate HQ. Youâre probably thinking, didnât he go through that? Itâs easy to do whatâs easy. And subconsciously thinking like everyone was on the U.S. central time zone was very easy to do. And then I started hiring more people on my team and traveling globally for our creative projects, video and photoshoots, and social media training. Workdays and Time Zones Thereâs something that you discover when traveling for work. First, itâs the jet lag that knocks you for a loop. Depending on how far youâve gone, that has varying effects and copious amounts of coffee helps. A little. The real challenge in the time zones is not simply the precious overlap in the day when your team is also working at the same time. Itâs the length of the working day. Remember that while youâre sleeping, theyâre having meetings, working on projects, responding to emails, updating documents. So when you start your day, your inbox is full of messages, questions, and decision requests. This means that in order to get things done, many people work outside of so-called normal working hours. Itâs especially the case when youâre traveling away from your regular time zone. You wake up in the hotel, go into the local office and savor the face time with your team and the people that you support. You work a long, full day, and then something happens around 4 pm when the coffee no longer does the trick. You start to see emails, chat messages, and tags from the home office. Your workday is much much longer now. Then you realize that this is normal for your team members in this office, and you start to appreciate them even more. Human Connection Thereâs something about breaking bread across a table with your workmates. As basic as it sounds, it really does help you relate to them as more than your co-workers, but as fellow humans. Weâre all facing similar challenges and fears, we all struggle with time management, and most of us want to be inspired in our lives outside of work. Thatâs why those five minutes at the beginning of meetings are so important. To ask how everyone is doing, complain about the weather, or talk about their kids. It helps us relate to and appreciate each other. Which is why when I travel, I plan at least one meal out with my team members. More if the schedule allows. Not to go all fancy with the expenses, but to spend time outside of the office, being human with the people whom I respect and (yes) actually like. The time rocking the microphone at a karaoke bar in Tokyo (you know who you are) or the time you missed your taxi and walked two miles back to the hotel in Hyderabad, in the dark. Itâs that time together that you canât replicate through a video screen. When youâre traveling for a conference or workshop like the Talent Brand Summit in London, thereâs even more incentive to make lasting connections. Itâs these relationships that youâre going to need when you get back to your office. Real-world Practice I usually plan what Iâll get out of a trip before I book any travel. This helps me justify the expense, and be the most efficient I can be. The other benefit of traveling for work is that you get to see your plans, your preparation, and your hard work in action. You also get to see when all of your best intentions donât work out. Most of the time, itâs how you communicate that isnât understood or received. Other times, it falls apart when your plans (which were often created in a vacuum) collide with the actual office or cultural environment. Local culture eats good intentions (and employer brand strategy) for breakfast every day. Why should your boss approve your employer brand travel? Because they want you to understand and represent the authentic culture of your company. Because they want you to connect with your team and help them develop themselves personally and professionally. And because they want to see your attraction plans and employer brand strategies actually carried out as you intended. Thatâs how you know what youâre doing is actually working. Itâs the culture, itâs the connections, and itâs the quantifiable data that help you be successful as a global employer brand leader. It also helps to word your travel request carefully. If you travel for work, count yourself lucky. But always, always rememberwhat happens at karaoke, ends up on Facebook. Writing a Good Retail Resume
Writing a Good Retail ResumeWhen it comes to writing a good retail resume, you are probably aware that it is not a one-size-fits-all kind of document. You can, however, increase your chances of getting a job interview or placing an order by making sure your information is clear and professional. It is a good idea to write your resume from the perspective of the potential employer, since you are talking directly to a human being who will ultimately be making the hiring decision. Here are some guidelines for addressing the material in your resume.Make sure you address any prior or current experience by including a listing of job titles that include your prior employment. Also, if there is a lack of job experience on your resume, you might consider adding it. Usually, employers prefer applicants with at least some past experience, especially if they have shown that they can take direction well. Do not make the mistake of listing the experience as 'assistant manager' unless you have more than one manager title.Organization skills are a major part of good organizational skills. If you have not had much experience in this area, you might consider listing it as a skill. Your resume is a piece of collateral that demonstrates your ability to organize information and communicate effectively. Most people do not realize how important a knowledge of customer service is until they make a common mistake. The biggest mistake people make is to list a summary of their job skills as their greatest skill. This will not help you when applying for a position. While you should list any negative experience you have had in a positive light, do not place it in bold or italics. Employers look for you to contribute a positive statement that illustrates your level of experience. It is a good idea to list this type of negative experience on your resume in a separate section. Otherwise, you may be counted against your total number of experiences as a resume point.Your occupation will also need to define your level of responsibility, as well as any training or certification that you may have obtained. List these items under their appropriate heading on your resume. For example, if you received training in customer service, list the training on your job profile or in your educational background. However, if you hold a certification, you should list it under your profession heading. A good rule of thumb is to focus on the responsibilities that are directly related to the job you are seeking, but not to overstate or overuse your credentials. You need to address your skills and express your interest in the position. Don't say, 'I am looking forward to working with this person because...' Try to make a concise statement that focuses on the specific requirements you would be required to meet as part of the job. Don't forget to list the specific time period during which you plan to be assigned to the new job. An applicant's priorities will show if they are willing to wait for the proper position. Make sure you provide sufficient time to fill out the required forms.Writing a successful resume begins with the right skills. Check with your existing personnel manager or HR personnel to see what jobs you may have already done, and whether there is anything in particular you may have improved upon or learn from doing. Employers like candidates who have a good understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses. The key to making a good first impression is not to seem desperate, but to appear sincere in your application.
